Kiruna was founded after large iron ore bodies were found in two mountains. The Lappish people said the area where Kiruna was started could never be inhabited. Unfortuently no one listened, and now I live here. Here's Mike in front of an old drill. Now the drills and loaders are all remote controll operated by guys sitting at computers on the seventh floor of the head office building. |
| Look at the size of that tire! When they are on the loaders they are half filled with water so the many tons of iron ore don't topple the machines right over. | ![]() |

Mike's at the controls! Watch out! This is a machine where they used to dump out the iron ore. The whole thing is pretty amazing, but I can't really explain it without lots of diagrams and stuff. |
| Back at the museum we got to see all sorts of old equipment. We even got to see a two room shanty that nine people lived in. I can't imagine it. Here I am testing out an old fashioned telephone. | ![]() |

I'm the winner! See that big piece of iron I'm lifting? Everyone in our group had to lift it and guess it's weight. I guessed 70 pounds, and won. Of course, I didn't get a prize. It weighed 37 kilos. |
| We went out to a special museum place on Midsommar's. For some reason that I can't remember now, we decided to get a picture of this old bear. | ![]() |

Here's people dancing around the Maypole (I can't figure out the name, since Midsommer is in late June). |

For some reason we watched these guys tow in a net for a LONG time and we never understand why they were doing it. Out on the lake you can also see the sauna boat. It has a sauna onboard, and then people just jump in the lake to cool off. |
