Winter Festival

Kiruna is known as Winter City, so the Winter Festival is a very important event for the city. Here you can see two reindeer racing through town. Reindeer races sound exciting, don't they? Trust me, they are not. The deer are too stupid to know they are in a race, so they just sort of lolly gag around, while the touristy racer guys lay on the sled and yell at them.
The festival included a display of Sami (the natives of the land here) culture in the parking lot of the movie theatre. Here you can see that the Sami people used to live in teepees. I really don't think they still do, but I could be wrong.
Do these reindeer make you think of Santa? Me either. I think Santa's reindeer must have been mutants. The white reindeer is very cool and brings people luck. It doesn't seem so lucky, though, b/c it is missing one of its horns. Poor thing.
My favorite part of the winter festival was the ice sculpture contest. Here you can see several of the sculptures.
Mike is standing in one.
Scottish Pine by the Scottish ice sculpting team.
I thought those were polar bears, but I guess they are supposed to be birds. It actually won first place.
Mike hated this sculpture. For some reason he thought it was freaky. I wanted to take a picture of me picking her nose, but there were too many people around so I tried to show some sense of decorum.
Another pic of some of the sculptures. I liked the one at the very back the best I think.
